Emerging Geospatial Applications in Local Government: How the County of Los Angeles leverages geospatial capabilities to support planning and decision-making (Recording)

Steven J. Steinberg –  Geospatial Information Officer, County of Los Angeles

Local government has a long history of using location-based information in planning and managing their communities and services. From the early days of mapping and survey to modern geographic information systems and remotely sensed data, the planning, assessment, service and response to constituents’ needs relies on location-based information. As the County of Los Angeles continues to develop applications addressing complex issues such as equity, sustainability, resilience and the provision of a variety of government services it continually explores new opportunities to benefit from emerging geospatial data and methods. In this presentation, Dr. Steinberg will share examples of applications of geospatial approaches being used and explored by the County of Los Angeles including examples leveraging mobile data, remotely sensed imagery and lidar, 3-D mapping, deep learning and artificial intelligence to effectively serve its departments and constituents.

Using Lidar and Multispectral Aerial Imagery to Support Wildfire Support Planning and Recovery (Recording)

Jason Caldwell - Vice President of Business Development and Sales, Sanborn Map Company

Bridget Marcotte - Project Manager, Sanborn Map Company

Annually, wildfires destroy millions of dollars in property and other assets throughout the United States. Not only do wildfires present an inherent threat to human life and infrastructure, but they also affect air quality, recreation, timber harvests, hydrology, wildlife, and the overall ecosystem health. With increasing human expansion into areas that are more prone to wildfires, the risk to property and danger to human lives continues to grow significantly, creating the critical need for the implementation of comprehensive fire management plans. Remote sensing data is a great resource to support consistent, up-to-date information for fire management programs. Sanborn we leverages a combination of remote sensing, GIS and wildfire management expertise into cost-effective, targeted solutions for both regional and community sized applications. This presentation will focus on how existing data such as multispectral imagery and USGS 3DEP lidar data can be used to identify high-risk and loss potential ahead of wildfire events as well as how the use of this data supports damage assessment, situational awareness, and overall recovery plans after an event. The presentation will include an example over the 2021 Colorado Marshall Fire near Boulder, Colorado where Sanborn utilized multiple vintages of lidar data supported by artificial intelligence and machine learning to quickly provide damage assessment analytics after the emergency event.

Business Applications of GIS in Sustainable Integrated Pest Management, Landscaping and Forest Management (Recording)

Naresh Duggal - Manager, Integrated Pest Management, Office of Sustainability, County of Santa Clara

Chris Curry -  Senior Analyst, Office of Sustainability, County of Santa Clara

This presentation showcases GIS use-cases in the County's Office of Sustainability (OOS) concerning integrated pest management (IPM) and urban forestry management projects. Details will include the need and the expected outcomes from a programmatic level.

For these projects, OOS is working with Plan-IT Geo to configure their existing online GIS database product to better serve the needs of the Office. Plan-IT Geo staff will give a demonstration to highlight the features of the product, the vision, and the progress to this point in configuring it for specific project use.

For IPM projects, the configured GIS database should streamline processing pesticide use requests, analysis of pest inspection data, pest treatment recordkeeping, and improve the ability of County staff to make informed decisions on pest management.

For urban forestry, Plan-IT Geo’s TreePlotter product allows for searching, filtering, and analysis of the County’s facilities and parks tree inventory. In addition, the County is also able to import community environmental and demographic data to help prioritize tree planting and plan future canopy growth.
